Th6013 - Medical Update for Dentistry: From Bisphosphonates to Blood Thinners

Practitioners are caring for an aging population that often present with complex medical histories. The rules for appropriate patient management are constantly changing. BRONJ (bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw) is now MRONJ (medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw). Total joint replacement patients no longer need premedication. Patients on Coumadin and other blood thinners do not always need to stop medications prior to dental treatment. This course will discuss current recommendations for appropriate management of patients with these and other various medical issues.

Topics include: legal ethics and professionalism in the practice of dentistry, education and training regarding professional boundaries; unprofessional conduct relating to the commission of acts of sexual intimacy, abuse, misconduct or exploitation with regard to the practice of dentistry; legislative updates and changes to the laws relating to the practice of dentistry as well as rules, policies and advisory opinions and rulings issued by the board; and proper professional conduct and ethics; proper billing practices; professional liability and risk management.

Note: This course helps to fulfill the Georgia Board of Dentistry CE requirement.

Cross-contamination, contaminated water lines, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and complex infections pose significant challenges in clinical practice. This course emphasizes proper infection control protocols and the importance of antibiotic stewardship for patient safety. This course satisfies the Georgia Board of Dentistry’s infection control training requirement for dentists and hygienists.
