A Message from Society President William Rousseau

It's Great to be Back!

None of us will ever forget the last 18 months. It began with the difficult decision to cancel Hinman 2020 only one week before the Meeting, followed by the conversion of all Society meetings to a virtual format. We were very fortunate to have had two very capable and dedicated leaders, Bob O’Donnell and Sedgie Newsom, as well as a very dedicated, flexible, hard-working Hinman staff to guide us through the pandemic. I’m sure you are as excited
as I am about returning to “normal.”

Jane Puskas and I had the privilege of working as Program Chairs for General Chair Bob O’Donnell assembling the 2020 Meeting. After the Meeting was cancelled, we immediately began trying to put the pieces back together for the Hinman 2021 program. As you can imagine, the plan changed on a weekly basis. We explored a number of different options, but Bob was dedicated to being the first dental meeting to return with live, in-person lectures. With Bob’s unwavering leadership and the creativity of the Hinman staff, our hybrid meeting was a big hit. People were thrilled to be in person and were
also happy to be able to view virtual classes for weeks afterwards. Thanks, Bob, for your leadership and your obvious love for Hinman!

Speaking of leadership, Sedgie Newsom agreed to serve a second year as Society President and was able to re-invent not only our Society meetings, but
also add some other continuing education options for our members. Sedgie’s presidency ended with a fun annual meeting at the Grove Park Inn. It was
great to finally see Sedgie without a mask!

I am honored to become the 2021-2022 Hinman President. Hinman has always been a part of my life. My father is a lifelong member and a past General
Chair. I fondly remember attending the annual meeting at Callaway Gardens as a child and also going to the Exhibit Hall when it was in the parking
deck of the Marriott. Most of my closest friends are Hinman members, and my children grew up going to the annual meeting almost every year. I encourage
each of you to get involved as much as you are able. You will not regret it.

Michael Leingang will be the Program Chair for the Membership Meetings this year, and he has assembled a great group of speakers. Dr. Mike Pruett, an MCG

classmate of mine, will kick off our year on September 20, at the InterContinental Hotel in Buckhead. On November 15, Mr. John McGill will speak at the Crown

Plaza Perimeter. For our final meeting of the year on January 20 we will return to the Georgia Aquarium. Please bring your staff to hear Dr. Uche Odiatu. All of

our lectures begin at 4 p.m. and are followed by a brief business meeting, cocktails and then dinner. Remember, to fulfill your requirements for membership,

everyone must attend at least one Membership Meeting per year.

Kate Robinson and her Program Chairs, Jim Roos and Randy Phillips, are currently putting their finishing touches on next year’s March meeting. The very appropriate

theme is “Navigating Dental Disruptions.” Kate and her team have worked hard, and I know their efforts will result in a successful Meeting. The Hinman Dental Meeting

is very special and unique because of the dedication of our members. Please remember to sign up for at least eight hours of service.

Finally, I would like to thank Sylvia Ratchford for her service to Hinman. Sylvia is a tremendous example of what a leader should be. She was able to work
successfully with a wide spectrum of personalities that changed on an annual basis. In the rare event that she did not know the answer to an obscure question,

she would always find it quickly and accurately, but, in my opinion, her greatest skill was the ability to assemble a great team — including helping to find her

successor, Annette Sullivan. Thank you Sylvia, and thank you Annette, Lynn, Jackie, Wendy, Stephanie, Caitlyn and Britney.

I look forward to seeing everyone in person over the coming year. Please contact me if I can be of service and thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving

as your President.

- William
