A Message from Society President Sedgie Newsom

2020: We Didn't See That Coming!

Wow! What a year we’ve had! The Masters in November. Partial seasons in football. The inability to physically get together with our friends and loved ones, which is the true essence of our human nature, has led to a new norm of Zoom meetings with friends and family.

We’ve had to drastically change the way we practice dentistry, the way we socialize, the way we interact with our families, the way we get our continuing education and the way that we conduct all of our Hinman business. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

During these unprecedented times, remember that this too shall pass.

As you all know, we’ve decided to proceed with our March Meeting in a hybrid format with both in-person and virtual components. Dr. Bob O’Donnell, our 2021 Chair, along with his Program Chairs, Drs. Jane Puskas and William Rousseau, have been meeting with the Hinman staff every  week, fine-tuning and re-inventing our Meeting in
the era of COVID-19. All signs point to this being an outstanding meeting that will keep our beloved Society at the forefront of dental meetings across the country.

We will have a great gathering at our Annual Meeting at The Omni Grove Park Inn June 3-6, 2021 as a way to celebrate all the hard work that I’m sure will result in a successful 2021 Hinman Dental Meeting. Reservations are now open for our group, so book your room through the Hinman website to take advantage of the reduced rates. I’m sure by June, we’ll all be ready for some family fun, including our famous Hinman Bingo! I look forward to seeing you in Asheville!

I’m so pleased that we’ve had such great participation in our first two Hinman Society meetings this year with viewership in the high 200s. At our first meeting, Charles Loretto gave us insight on navigating the CARES Act and PPP waters. At our most recent meeting, Tom Viola was so entertaining and instructive in his presentation,
“It’s Medically Complicated.” That course was a meat and potatoes lecture full of great information that we could take back and use in our practices.

Our next Hinman Society meeting will be Thursday evening, January 21, 2021 and will be a virtual event. We are so fortunate to have Dr. Roger Levin as our speaker, a nationally known and highly engaging dental consultant. We traditionally bring our staffs to this lecture. You can still do that! Why not order a nice dinner for you and your staff that evening after work on Thursday, and enjoy the time together as a good team building experience? It’ll be a fun evening. Needless to say, your staff will appreciate
the kind gesture!

Remember, one of the membership requirements of our Hinman Dental Society is to attend at least one of the Society meetings during the year. If you haven’t signed up for Dr. Levin’s lecture, please do so and add your staff.

I want to thank Dr. David Anderson for his outstanding job serving as my right hand and Program Chair this year. Great work, David!

Finally, I want to share what a terrific job our new Executive Director, Annette Sullivan, is doing with the Society. Annette has caught on beautifully and is getting fully up to speed with all of the intricacies of our Society. If you’ve ever wondered how Hinman would exist without Sylvia as our ED, rest assured that thanks to Sylvia’s excellent tutelage, the baton will be passed to Annette as seamlessly as a Gold Medal Olympic relay team.

As 2020 comes to a close-Thank Goodness!-and as we reflect on what we’ve all endured and survived, we have to realize just how blessed we are to be healthy, to practice the great profession of dentistry and to be members of Hinman, the most prestigious dental society in this country. There are challenging times ahead with COVID cases
significantly on the rise, but with due diligence in our day-to-day lives and with the arrival of vaccines, we will be stronger from our mutually shared sacrifices. We just have to hang in there a little longer!

As I’ve said before, we must embrace the long view. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and remember, 2020 will soon be in the rear view mirror!

- Sedgie
