The 2018 #MyHinman Scholarship Winners
Posted: 7/20/2018

We recently announced the winners of our 2018 #MyHinman Campaign, which awarded scholarships to three deserving students.

·       1st Place $1,500: Alexis Gentry - Augusta Technical College Department of Dental Assisting

·       2nd Place $1,000:  Teresa Tran - Clayton State University Department of Dental Hygiene

·       3rd Place $500: Hannah Lee - Georgia Perimeter College Department of Dental Hygiene

We kicked off the campaign in Fall 2017 and asked participants to post using the official hashtag, #MyHinman, on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to help raise money for scholarships and be entered into a monthly drawing for $100 cash. Hinman and its official housing company, EventSphere, donated to the scholarship bank each time a post was shared on social media with the #MyHinman hashtag.

Individuals were encouraged to vote for which schools should receive the “My Hinman” scholarships and the top three schools receiving the most votes were named 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. The schools then named a deserving recipient.

“For nearly two decades, the Hinman Dental Meeting has contributed millions of dollars to students and dental education programs throughout the country. The #MyHinman campaign was another fun way to raise money for students while celebrating the reasons we all love the Meeting and the Hinman experience,” said Dr. Pat Yancey III, General Chairman for Hinman 2018.

We caught up with the #MyHinman scholarship winners to find out more about their plans for the scholarship and what they have been up to since Hinman.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?

Alexis: I plan to take the DANB certification. And, hopefully get employed by the office I am currently rotating in (I have an offer).

Teresa: My plans after graduation definitely include taking my boards exam and enjoying my time off before working on my license application and finding a job.

Hannah: As a recent dental hygiene graduate, I will be working part-time at the office where I worked as a dental assistant. I also plan on working as a temporary dental hygienist at different offices. I look forward to utilizing all that I have learned in the past two years while treating my future patients in private practice.

Q: Did you take any courses or go to any special events for students while at Hinman?

Alexis: This was my first Hinman and I did not know what to expect, so I stayed on the exhibit floor and took in as much information as I could. But, that was overwhelming in and of itself.

Teresa: I went to the CRDTs prep course and I also attended the Masquerade Party at the Georgia Aquarium.

Hannah: Unfortunately, I was unable to attend courses at Hinman this year. However, as a Hinman Scholarship recipient, I attended the luncheon with two of my fellow classmates along with all the other recipients.

Q: How did you feel when you learned you were #MyHinman scholarship winner?

Alexis: I felt grateful that my school was selected and that my instructor chose me. I felt all my hard work had paid off.

Teresa: When I found out I won the scholarship at the pinning ceremony at my university, I was ecstatic and surprised because I won something and I didn’t expect it at all.

Hannah: I was extremely surprised when I found out I was one of the #MyHinman scholarship winners.

Q: Do you have any special plans for how to use the scholarship funds?

Alexis: The money will help towards my last semester this summer and I plan to use it towards my DANB certification. I am also splitting the money with a classmate who helped me lead the #MyHinman initiative on our campus for school votes.

Teresa: It’s nothing special, but I plan on using the scholarship money to help pay for my Boards and CRDTs exam.

Hannah: This financial award will help toward paying back my student loans.

The #MyHinman campaign is returning for Hinman 2019 with additional scholarships being awarded after the meeting, March 21-23, 2019. Click here for details.
