It didn’t take me long after graduating from Emory University’s School of Dentistry in the spring of 1978 to realize that I was a really good clinician, but a really bad businessman! Although I had developed some entrepreneurial skills early in life with a lawn-mowing business, and had developed “customer service” skills through employment by a grocer, I really had no clue regarding the many issues involved with opening, operating, or successfully transitioning a small business to its new owner!
Some thirty-eight years later, I’ve managed to do all three! But it wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t always fun! Fortunately, if you’re new to this great profession, you don’t have to attend the same “school of hard knocks” I experienced in order to be a success.
